IJR has adopted the CC BY-SA which is a popular open license used in academic publishing and other creative works. This license allows others to remix, tweak, and build upon the work even for commercial purposes, as long as the new creations credit the original creator and are licensed under identical terms. This means all new works based on the original will carry the same license, thus allowing any derivatives to also be available for further modification and sharing under the same license terms.
Key Features of the CC BY-SA License:
- Attribution: Users must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. This can be done in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
- ShareAlike: If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.
- Commercial Use: Users are allowed to use the licensed material for commercial purposes. There are no restrictions on making money from the use of the licensed material.
- No Additional Restrictions: You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
Implications for Academic Publishing: In the context of academic publishing, especially in open access journals like IJR, the CC BY-SA license can be particularly beneficial. It promotes a collaborative and open academic environment where researchers are not only allowed but encouraged to freely distribute, modify, and make practical use of the published works.
- Enhancing Collaboration: By allowing derivative works and ensuring they carry the same license, the CC BY-SA fosters an environment of collaboration among academics and practitioners across disciplines.
- Ensuring Access: This license ensures that the work remains free and accessible to all, aligning with the open access mission of many academic journals that aim to disseminate knowledge widely and without barriers.
- Promoting Innovation: With the possibility of modifying and building upon the works for commercial use, there is a potential for greater innovation and application of academic research in real-world scenarios.
CC BY-SA license to IJR is intended to significantly influence the dissemination, utilization, and collaborative expansion of scholarly work. It aligns with the goals of open access by removing barriers to research visibility and usage, thereby enhancing the global exchange of knowledge.
