Appraisal of the Contemporary Household Waste Management Policies, Institutional and Implementation Strategies in Oyo State
Abstract
Management of household waste in Nigeria, particularly in Oyo State is very crucial in order to ensure environmental protection and public health. To achieve this, more efforts are required by the government, environmental agencies and the general public. The study therefore aimed to appraise the contemporary waste management policies and intervention strategies put in place in Oyo State. An in-depth interview was conducted on twenty-one (21) waste management opinion leaders who were: 12 private waste contractors in Ibadan, four Environmental and Health Officers, four Baales/Community leaders, and one representative from Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) with the aid of interview guide. Findings shows that Oyo State has several agencies that were saddled with the responsibility of organizing and controlling waste management activities and also creating awareness to the public on the importance of waste handling. It was also found that the waste management policies were considered ineffective because of poor policy implementation, poor structure of waste management institutional framework and inadequate compliance of the public to waste management policies and regulations.
