Police Accountability in Strengthening Democratic Trust: An Analytical Perspective
Abstract
Police accountability forms the bedrock of democratic governance, as law enforcement agencies serve as the most visible representatives of state authority. While their core duty is to uphold law and order, their legitimacy rests equally on principles of fairness, transparency, and responsibility. In many democracies, however, instances of misconduct, corruption, and excessive use of force have undermined public confidence, creating a trust deficit between citizens and the police. This analytical study examines the relationship between accountability mechanisms and the strengthening of democratic trust. By engaging with legal frameworks, judicial oversight, human rights principles, and comparative practices across jurisdictions, the research highlights how effective accountability fosters credibility, reduces abuses of power, and enhances cooperation between citizens and law enforcement.
