Abstract

English has played a pivotal role in shaping India's educational, cultural, and socio-economic condition. Introduced by the British for administrative control and missionary outreach, English quickly evolved into a powerful medium for education and communication across India. At present English serves as a second language in most Indian states and acts as a vital tool for higher education, international discourse, and socio-economic mobility. This paper examines the journey of English as a second language (ESL) in India, tracing its colonial roots, transformation through policy reforms, and current relevance in a multilingual and globalized context. The use of English has grown remarkably over the years, especially after liberalization in the 1990s, making it the preferred medium in schools, workplaces, and even social settings. The paper further discusses how English has evolved from being a foreign language to a powerful national instrument of empowerment, reflecting on the changing objectives and methodologies of English Language Teaching (ELT). Despite its widespread use, challenges persist in delivering effective ESL Teaching across India’s diverse educational conditions.
