Abstract

This paper critically examines the interconnected themes of fate, freedom, and Krishna’s role in Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s The Palace of Illusions. By placing Draupadi at the center, the novel reimagines the Mahabharata through a distinctly female perspective. The first section explores how fate shapes her life—from birth to death—under the weight of prophecy and duty. The second section investigates the illusion of freedom, particularly personal and gendered freedom, as Draupadi's choices are repeatedly constrained by societal and divine expectations.
