Nigeria and Democracy: A Voyage of Turbulence and Hope
Abstract
This paper, Nigeria and Democracy: A Voyage of Turbulence and Hope, critically examines Nigeria’s democratic journey, highlighting its oscillation between promise and peril. Drawing upon the philosophical method of critical analysis, the essay interrogates the foundational ideals of democracy — liberty, justice, participation, and accountability, and contrasts them with the Nigerian experience since independence. The analysis explores key historical epochs, from military rule to the Fourth Republic, emphasising recurring issues such as electoral malpractice, corruption, ethno-religious tensions, and weak institutions. While these factors have continuously challenged democratic consolidation, the paper also identifies undercurrents of hope: rising civic consciousness, judicial interventions, youth activism, and the role of technology in political engagement. Through a reflective critique, the paper argues that Nigeria’s democracy remains a contested space, fraught with systemic dysfunctions but not devoid of transformative potential.
