Occupational Transition and Migration Patterns of Lewa Patidar Households in Jalgaon District
Abstract
This study examines the occupational transition and migration patterns of the Lewa Patidar community in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra. Traditionally an agrarian caste, the community has experienced significant socio-economic changes through intra-rural migration. Based on primary data from migrant households—residing in villages for periods ranging from five to over thirty years—the study explores key variables such as migration duration, current occupations, household income, employment participation, satisfaction levels, and access to rural employment schemes. The findings reveal a notable occupational shift from agriculture to self-employment and wage labour. While some households report improved economic conditions and satisfaction post-migration, others continue to face employment and income insecurity. Limited and uneven access to government programs like MGNREGA highlights implementation challenges. The study offers grassroots-level insights into caste-based rural transformation, with implications for policymakers and rural development practitioners
