The Role of Grampanchayat in Rural Development
Abstract
The Grampanchayat, as the foundational unit of the Panchayati Raj system in India, plays a critical role in shaping and sustaining rural development. This paper explores the multifaceted functions of Grampanchayats, including planning and implementation of development programs, provision of basic infrastructure, and promotion of social welfare schemes at the grassroots level. By analyzing governance mechanisms, community participation, and the effectiveness of decentralization, the study highlights how Grampanchayats contribute to improving the quality of life in rural areas. Challenges such as financial constraints, lack of administrative capacity, and political interference are also examined. The study concludes by suggesting strategies to empower Grampanchayats for more inclusive and sustainable rural development.
