Abstract

Vijay Tendulkar holds a distinguished place in the evolution of modern Indian literature, particularly through his impactful contribution to Indian drama. Known for his sharp social critique and realistic portrayal of contemporary life, Tendulkar often foregrounds the struggles of women, especially those from the middle class, within a patriarchal society. His play Kamala stands as a powerful testament to this thematic concern. In Kamala, Tendulkar presents the stark realities of gender inequality through the character of Sarita, the protagonist, who lives under the oppressive control of her husband, Jai Singh Jadhav—a self-serving journalist. Sarita's individuality and identity are systematically eroded in the confines of a male-dominated household, where her voice and agency are suppressed. This research paper seeks to examine the complex predicaments faced by Sarita and to trace her gradual awakening and journey toward self-realization and emancipation within the narrative of the play.
