Precursors of Sustainable Development in William Wordsworth’s Poem The World is Too Much With Us
Abstract
This paper examines William Wordsworth’s poem “The World is Too Much With Us” through the lens of sustainable development.Though the concept of sustainable development was first popularized in 1972 UN conference, but but the visionary power of romantic poetry predicted the concept well bedore this date.Written in 1807, the poem critiques the rapid industrialization and material nature of the Romantic period where it raises issues that related to contemporary concerns about environmental degradation and social sustainability. Through the poem’s reflections on nature, human disassociation and the pursuit of material gain, this paper explores how Wordsworth’s themes not only align with modern interpretations of sustainable development in relation to environmental conservation, social equity, and the importance of maintaining a harmonious relationship with nature but it is also an early warning from a visionary poet more than two hundred years earlier.
